In these difficult financial times many employers may be faced with the difficult decision of laying off or terminating an employee. Employers may not be familiar with the Health Insurance Marketplace (HIM) and the plans available, especially as an affordable alternative option to COBRA.

It's important for employees who have lost their jobs to know that the Affordable Care Act includes a provision that gives people 60 days to enroll in a health care plan after a qualifying event, such as loss of employer-sponsored health coverage. Qualifying employees may also be eligible for financial assistance to further lower their monthly premium.
