Rural Beneficiaries Switching From MA

More than 1 in 10 seniors (10.5%) enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and living in a rural area switched to traditional Medicare during 2010-2016, a change driven by low satisfaction with care access, according to a study in Health Affairs. By contrast, only 1.7% of rural traditional Medicare enrollees made the switch to M/A during the same period.

Medicare open enrollment begins Thursday, and experts say to keep an eye on how insurers are offering supplemental benefits and the growth of telehealth. Medicare Advantage enrollment has climbed annually for the past several years, particularly as Baby Boomers continue aging into the program. And that's a trend not likely to slow down, said Adam Finkelstein, counsel at Manatt Health.
